Job Summary

Denver Health & Hospital is currently recruiting for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Infectious Disease Physician who will work for the Department of Medicine and Department of Patient Safety and Quality. This position will be split between inpatient infectious disease consultative and quality and safety efforts focused on hospital epidemiology, infection prevention (primarily inpatient) and/or antimicrobial stewardship work in the hospital and ambulatory settings. Ten weeks of Attending on the inpatient ID consult service will be required and is generally completed in 1-2 week blocks throughout the year. This allocation will be reviewed at least annually by the Division of Infectious Disease. This will include supervision of a full-time fellow from the University of Colorado training program and may also include teaching of medical residents or students. The successful candidate will be joining a clinical division with spans both the Public Health Institute at Denver Health and the Department of Medicine and includes 11 ID physicians. If desired, there is potential to offset some of the required clinical ID work through other avenues, including inpatient or outpatient orthopedic infectious disease work or a half-day of outpatient infectious diseases clinic weekly.

With regard to Infection Prevention/Hospital Epidemiology/Antimicrobial Stewardship, the successful candidate will lead or assist in projects that prevent healthcare associated infections, investigate clusters of infections, and improve the use of antimicrobial agents in the hospital and outpatient settings that support Denver Health's commitment to serving the public health needs for Denver County. The candidate will serve as a core physician member of the leadership team of the Department of Patient Safety and Quality.

Minimum Qualifications:
*Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado or eligible for licensure
*Board-certified or board-eligible in Infectious Diseases

*Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
*Ability to implement evidence-based infection prevention/antimicrobial stewardship interventions in hospital and ambulatory care settings.
*Previous work experience or formal training in hospital epidemiology and infection prevention.

*Familiarity and experience with common change management and quality improvement principles necessary to influence others, implement sustainable care protocols, and measure impact.
*Familiarity with common epidemiologic methods.
*Thorough knowledge of management of multidrug resistant organisms.
*Interest and experience in academic activities including research preferred.

  • Conducts clinical activities as defined in the privileging documents for this provider and delivers superior patient care by:
    - Determining and assessing the health status of patients by reviewing records, taking comprehensive medical histories, and performing physical examinations.
    - Monitoring and evaluating the medical condition of patient.
    - Making decisions regarding treatment changes and referring patient to specialized services as needed.
    - Applying thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
    - Encouraging increased patient understanding and involvement in care. (65%)
  • Initiates, performs, or directs other healthcare professionals to perform screenings and diagnostic tests. (15%)
  • Serves as a teacher for students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provides education for post graduate medical trainees. (10%)
  • Provides leadership to improve outcomes and service quality. (5%)
  • Works to ensure personnel, department, and organization are in compliance with all legal and educational requirements. (5%)

Education:

  • Doctorate Degree Graduation from an Accredited Medical School and completed Accredited Residency Programs and fellowships for specialist, or equivalent. Required

Licenses:

  • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Skill in eliciting history from patients, performing physical exams, formulating assessments, and determining treatment plans for patients.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in the treatment of infectious diseases.
  • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
  • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels, and value systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • EPIC experience preferred.
